Battery-Ready Solar System: Solar vs Hybrid Inverter

Which is Best for Adding Batteries Later: Hybrid Inverter or Solar Inverter?

Introduction

Okay, let's clear this up: When someone says "battery-ready" for a solar PV system, they mean it's set up with a hybrid inverter but doesn't include a battery yet. Hybrid inverters are made to add batteries later, but they're not your only choice for doing so in a grid-tied PV solar system.

What Would I Get?

In our opinion depending on future technology promises to influence your solar PV system choice should be discarded, along with so-called 'expandable solar systems.' If you aren't ready to add batteries right now, it may not happen, so don't let it impact your inverter selection.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add batteries later!

If I had to choose between the two, I'd lean towards a regular grid-tie string inverter. While I'm not one for taking chances, this option seems more likely to align with my future battery goals. If I were starting fresh with a PV system and a battery, I'd opt for a hybrid inverter. But hey, that's just my take!

Why? Let’s Break It Down

String inverter systems work with AC-coupled batteries, and these batteries are not picky about the inverter brand. They're hooked up to the AC part of the electrical system, so it doesn't matter at all which brand or how many inverters are also connected.

However, hybrid inverters are DC-coupled and come with compatibility restrictions. Only certain battery models will be compatible with each inverter. Plus, there's no assurance that your preferred battery will still be available in the future. So, when you're ready to install it, you might find yourself in a sticky situation.

Although there are other factors to consider when picking an inverter, this one alone is enough to sway my hypothetical decision in favor of a string inverter when hoping to add a battery later. It’s like an insurance policy to strengthen my chances of fulfilling my plans.

More Reasons To Play Safe

  • String inverters are simpler gadgets, which means setting one up without batteries is cheaper at the beginning compared to a hybrid inverter. But remember, I mentioned the 'upfront' cost? That's just a piece of the puzzle if you want the installer to come back and do extra work.
  • Technology moves fast! If you opt for an inverter-agnostic AC-coupled system when you're ready to add a battery, you'll have a better chance of embracing future technology and less risk of being tied to a specific brand ecosystem that might not support your chosen product later on.

Or Risk It

Perhaps I'm being overly cautious? Boring! Hybrid inverters paired with batteries have several benefits over string inverters AC coupled with batteries. Why not take a chance? You've got to take risks to reap the rewards, right? In support of the 'battery ready' hybrid inverters:

  • Hybrid inverters are made specifically to work with battery storage systems and are more efficient. They'll slightly convert more solar power into usable electricity. Plus, monitoring your solar generation, battery storage, and energy usage is usually bundled into one neat app for easy viewing.
  • Adding a battery to a hybrid inverter is simpler than connecting one to a string inverter system. That's why they call it 'battery-ready.' In the long term, it might work out cheaper to go for a hybrid inverter instead of a string inverter, considering the initial solar setup and then adding a battery later.
  • With a DC-coupled solar battery system, you can fit more solar panels on your roof (if space allows) because the 133% oversizing rule doesn't apply. Just remember, installers can't connect the extra panels until you have the battery installed. This brings us back to my main point of taking a gamble on whether the necessary products will be available when you need them.

Why Not Stick In A Battery Right Now?

No doubt, people are asking this question mainly because they're waiting for battery prices to drop. Can't assist with that, sorry. But I've presented a solid argument for both inverters. Now, let's shift gears and make a case for installing a battery right away instead of waiting. (By the way, I'm not advocating for or against home batteries, and definitely not trying to sell you one!)

1. If you're considering a battery, it's cheaper to install it alongside your solar system regardless of the inverter you choose. Avoiding a second installation visit saves a heap of cash. It's pretty much common sense, but I'll say it anyway.

2. They say a week's a long time in politics, and the same goes for the solar industry. Will your installer still be available after all your dilly-dallying? Will the network rules remain unchanged? Electricians aren't usually keen on fixing issues from other installers' past jobs. They're bound by current regulations, which can lead to headaches and extra costs for you.

A Couple More Things

While a hybrid inverter is designed for DC coupling with a battery, you can still add an AC-coupled battery to your system. Concerns about being stuck with a specific brand may not actually happen. However, it's not the best scenario, and could end up wasting money if you pay for inverter features you won't use.

Lastly, remember to discuss your future battery plans with your installer during the design phase. Consider this when deciding the location of the inverter, potential battery placement, modifications to the switchboard, and planning for future cabling needs for the battery, backup circuits, and monitoring.
